I don’t know about you, but I find it really shocking when a couple whose wedding I attended, hoping like everyone else they would be happy ever after, announce they’re splitting up. Yet it’s happening more and more. Starter marriages are the big new phenomenon of the 21st century: a bit like a starter home, which you suddenly realize you’ve outgrown. I’d love to know what you think of this trend - please fill in my survey.
My character, Tess, is devastated when her husband moves out. Her best friend persuades her to try a 'divorce survival course', a kind of boot camp for the broken-hearted… the men and women she meets there will change her life! Tess has a very rocky road to feeling better but there are also lots of laughs along the way.
But it’s not just about divorce… The Starter Marriage is for anyone who's ever been dumped! I wanted to write a book that was completely honest about the ups and downs of being dumped - or the guilt if you're the one who's done the dumping. I love TV shows like Cold Feet and Friends where people’s stories are interconnected and I hope I’ve done the same here. It pulls no punches about how it feels to have to start over - but the characters are still funny, optimistic and full of surprises. Exactly like life!
But, unlike life, in fiction you can make sure the characters get exactly what they deserve… I loved writing this book and I hope you’ll enjoy the story of life after Happy Ever After…
